Comparing Your Food Waste Treatment Options

Wrap your head around this – nearly one third of all municipal landfill content is organic food waste. The need for a sustainable food waste treatment solution that can be scaled to meet the everyday needs that food waste generators face has never been greater. How do your options stack up?

Industrial Composting

This natural biological process may seem like the most environmentally conscious option for businesses that promote green business practices. While it is safer for the environment than traditional landfill methods, composting requires separate collection and storage containers, not to mention a separate collection vehicle to transport the waste which negatively impacts the food waste generator carbon footprint. Composting can also cause a foul odor and bring pest and sanitation issues, if the waste is not serviced in a timely basis.

By drying food waste, these systems use energy to remove water to drive food waste volume reduction. While it does solve odor issues, it produces a re-usable compost product and it requires a use for the produced by-product. For larger food waste generators, the processing equipment requires a large physical footprint, due to the long process time (16-18 hours) required to “dry” the food waste.

This technology reduces food waste volume by extracting water, providing the ability to accommodate many types of food waste. However the extracted water still contains BOD and COD properties that must be treated by the municipal wastewater treatment plants and the resulting pulp must be landfilled or diverted to acceptable non-landfill alternatives in states or municipalities that prohibit food waste from landfills.

EnviroPure Systems

EnviroPure’s self-contained, continual feed organic waste disposal system provides your most cost-effective solution, fully customizable to your unique needs. Since the waste is actually treated on-site, it is ideal for facilities and institutions that produce large volumes of food waste, such as hotels, resorts, hospitals, nursing homes, universities, cruise ships, and more, EnviroPure yields only environmentally safe grey water that can be safely treated at municipal wastewater treatment plants.

Food Waste Diversion Options Compared

The 100% organic process uses EP BioMix, a proprietary all-organic vitamin extract which accelerates the decomposition chemistry that naturally occurs with food waste. The technology is able to break down all food waste, including produce, meat, fish, poultry, dairy, bones, shells, and pits, and produces no solids. EnviroPure has no restrictions on hourly capacity and can be sized to process up to 14,000 pounds per day, in a small physical footprint.
